THE KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF THE HOME

To better suit their social lifestyle, the family featured in this article needed a reconfiguration of their kitchen and dining spaces. This family of four loves to spend time together, cook and entertain. They needed additional space for their daily workflow and an enlarged space for hosted events or on a simple school night.

One challenge was with less than 90 square feet of kitchen it limited one person to use the space at a time. Another challenge was there were multiple doors swings impeding the traffic flow. Additional challenges included an obstructive wall separated the kitchen and dining, and a corner window directed a view to the unsightly neighboring fence.

Their original intent was to enlarge their home’s footprint with an addition. A review of space usage was made which showed that while the kitchen, dining, living, and family rooms were traditionally separated, a combination of the casual dining and kitchen spaces would better fit their lifestyle needs.

The wall dividing the kitchen and dining area was demolished, in order to unite the two spaces. The lateral support required additional shear value added to the back of the home, which coordinated well with a decision to shift the window for a better backyard view. This solution allowed the “Great Room” to be executed.

A new tankless water heater allowed a re-purposing of the utility closet to incorporate a large pantry with double the storage capacity.

With a range of ages using the space and to accommodate tasks for all users, the Universal Design approach was used in the lighting selection and placement. Glare was decreased by implementing layers of light through a variety of suspended LED monorail fixtures, under-cabinet tape lighting, and decorative pendants.

Two-tone custom cabinets were chosen to maximize every inch of storage (through ergonomic internal components) while pro- viding a visually unique solution. Engineered Quartz “Lagos Blue” counter-tops provided a neutral, durable solid surface to compliment the tile back-splash and allow the handmade tiles from Spain to “shine”. These tiles were sourced on one of the family’s past Europe trips, reflecting their travels and added a delightful personal element.
